Andy Overall:
Agaricus arvensis
also recorded on 28/07/93 on the Heath ext.
[2]
Andy Overall:
Agaricus augustus
First recorded on 23/08/93 on Sandy Heath. Second in Golders Hill Park, 20th Oct 2006. Therefore infrequent.
[3]
Andy Overall:
Agaricus campestris
Also recorded on 20/9/92 on the Heath ext under lime along wildwood road.
[4]
Andy Overall:
Synonymous with
A. haemorrhoidarius.
[5]
Andy Overall:
Agaricus impudicus= A.variagatus
Began to appear late in 2001 on the Heath ext close to Quercus among brambles. It tends to appear late in the year.
[6]
Volunteer:
Often confused with A. arvensis which tends to have more yelowish hue. A. osecanus is also likely to be found closer to trees, whereas A. arvensis prefers pasture or grassland. A. osecanus has been noted in other areas of the heath other than the area noted on the database.
[7]
Andy Overall:
Agaricus romagnesii
Found under a garden Rhododendron, back from the West Meadow Meadow close to the 'The Elms' area. 2nd record under Hawthorn Nr Parliament Hill.
[8]
Andy Overall:
New Record: Found on bare soil directly beneath Tilea, one of many forming a narrow avenue between playing field and gully/small valley. A cluster of around 7 fb's. Pic taken. Fb's dried and deposited at Kew.

Andy Overall:
Agrocybe putaminum
Is an alien species inhabiting woodchip beds. It looks very much like the familiar Agrocybe praecox but with one big difference, it is ringless. It also has a sticky stem caused by numerous caulocystidia present on the stem.
[10]
Andy Overall: Alien species, loving compost heaps, spreading fast across the country. The rivulose cap is a give away.
[11]
Andy Overall:
Agorcybe vervacti
New Record. Small cluster growing in grass close to Horse Chestnut and Pinus abies in Golders Hill Park.
Cheilocystidia distinctivly lageniforme/narrow some sub-capitate. A very early fruiting as this species is normally Summer/Autumn.
[12]
Andy Overall:
Amanita annulosulp-hurea
Sandy Heath with Quercus robur, 2001 was a particularly good year for this species and others in this complex..
[13]
New Record - 5th only record for the GB and Ireland. 2nd for Middlesex. Described only in 2009.
Solitary specimen in bramble cleared area on the eastern end of the West meadow with Birch.
[14]
Andy Overall:
Amanita franchetii = A.aspera
As above.
[15]
Andy Overall:
Amanita gemmata, a new record for the heath, an infrequent to rare species. This collection with Hornbeam.
[16]
Andy Overall:
Amanita pantherina: New Record. Found growing with an unlikely host tree, Carpinus betula (Hornbeam) on the heath ext.
[17]
Andy Overall:
At last the first record of this notoriously deadly mushroom, by me, from Hampstead heath. Found with Hornbeam on the Heath ext.15/10/06.
[18]
Volunteer:
Amanita vaginata-The Grisette. New Record. In the 10 or so years that I have been recording the fungi of the Heath, this single collection constitutes the only record in all that time. In my estimation an infrequent to rare species, based upon the very few collections, across London, made by the LFG during a 10 year period.
[19]
Andy Overall:
Xerocomus
badius
In my opinion this species has become increasingly less common on the heath. I first recorded B.badius from the Heath on Aug 25th&28th 1992 and it was growing it quite large numbers in the Sandy Heath area with Silver Birch and Oak. It was also recorded on the following dates 7/9/92 (Jack Staws) Birch, 9/9/92 heath ext, 20/9/92 heath ext Oak. 28-30/07/93 Sandy heath in abundance. The erosion of this part of the heath by Mountain biking I believe has played a big part in the decline of B.badius from this area.
[20]
Andy Overall:
X.chrysenteron is now under some taxonomic scrutiny, as apart form particular microscopic details it is believed to be mycorrhizal with various species of conifer and very rarely with deciduous broad leaved trees. Until this is resolved this species on H.H. remains.
[21]
Andy Overall:
Xerocomus communis
Often confused with B.chrysenteron. The former has no reddening in the base of the stipe when cut in section. This species for some authors is synonomous with X.rubellus.
[22]
Andy Overall:
X. rubellus is very variable in size and colour and is often confused with other similar sized species of Xerocomus that produce red capped variants. This species more importantly is considered syn. with X. communis by some authors, an epithet created by Bon to cover the brown variants of X. rubellus. Confused?
[23]
Andy Overall:
Boletus appendiculatus: New Record. Found on West heath under lime with Oak in close poximity.
[24]
Andy Overall:
Boletus edulis
I have been recording B.edulis from the Heath since 25th Oct 1991and it seems to have faired much better than its cousin B.badius over the years. Also recorded on 25-28 Aug 92 Jack Straws,Birch, 6-7 Sep 92,
9 Sep & 21st Oct 92 Wildwood Rd Hornbeam. And then in 1993, 28-30/7/93 Sandy Heath & ext and on 23/8/93 sandy heath.
[25]
Andy Overall:
Boletus impolitus
This species first appeared to me on 23/8/93 upon two tree hill on sandy heath where it has been fruiting ever since. Thankfully a dead hedge has now been laid around the grass mound at the base of the trees to try deter mountain bikers who love this area for its up and down terrain.
[26]
Andy Overall:
Another Bolete that has become less common on the Heath over the past 10 years or so. I recorded it on 7/9/92 nr Jack straws under Birch. Wild wood road on the 9-20/9/92 under lime. On 21st Oct 92 from the same spot.
[27]
Andy Overall:
Boletus luridus
A surprise fruiting as this species is usually found on alkaline soils. 3 fb's practically growing on a track, close to the lime trees, along the path between West Heath and Golders Hill Park. Reoccured June 2004 in same location. (See Update 2004 page on website, link on walks page.
[28]

[31]
ASOverall:
Confused with
Macrolepiota rhacodes. Syn. M. bohemica
[32]
Andy Overall:
A new record, though apparently not uncommon, the first I've seen of it on the heath, found 20th Jan 2006, in soil among leaf litter, close to lime.

Andy Overall:
Lactarius circellatus
New record. Early fruiting on 30th May04. Fairly dry conditions no rain for 2 weeks. Eight specs, Growing in association with Hornbeam on a grass verge, alongside Wild Wood Road on the Heath ext.
[46]
Andy Overall:
May 2006 had a lot of rainfall with temperatures averaging around 15 degrees, hence the relatively early fruiting of this species.,
[47]
Andy Overall:
Leccinum carpini
With Hornbeam on the Heath ext, Wildwood Road and East Heath.
[48]
Andy Overall:
Early records could be interpreted as L. brunneogriseolum the more common of the two. (G.Kibby 2002)
[49]
Andy Overall:
Lepista saeva
Recorded Dec 1995 on grassy area opposite old Jack Straws area.
[50]
Andy Overall:
Stropharia aurantiaca
When the LFG recording began on the heath this species was considered rare, now of course it has spread like wild fire to every wood chip path and flower bed across London.
[51]
Andy Overall:
Leucoagaricus cepistipes
Found on a steaming compost mound. Deposited at Kew ID by Nick Legon, but material changed a purple colour on drying, which led nick to believe we were dealing with another species. This has unfortunatly not been followed up so will stay as
L. cepistipes
[52]
Andy Overall:
New record 2006. Though not an uncommon species, this collection made from a soil compost heap, the very same that Melanoleuca grammopodia, and M. cognata fruited on in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
[53]
Andy Overall:
New record for Hampstead Heath and indeed the 1st record for Middlesex. A small, Panellus-like species, growing on various woody substrates, favouring Beech. This record was from a sawn up trunk of beech on Sandy Heath.
[54]
Panus Conchatus:
New Record.
Found on an old Beech stump in Golders Hill Park. Fb's dried and deposited at Kew.
[55]
Andy Overall: Very closely resembles P. plicatilis, though while the species here can be found in soil or buried in woodland, the latter is confined to grassland.
[56]
Andy Overall: See P. leiocephala for comment.
[57]
Andy Overall:
Hemipholiota populnea
New Record; On Poplar in very damp/boggy area nr Vale of Health.
[58]
Andy Overall:
Pluteus petastatus
Growing in between raised roots of an Oak in Golders Hill Park.
[59]
This record on Wild Service.
[60]
Andy Overall:
Psathyrella laevissima is often mistaken as P. piluliformis and is apparently as common. The former is smaller in size overall, is lighter in colour with a more striate pileus. It is found, as this was among moss on old large tree trunks, especially Oak.
This species is hardly, if ever mentioned in any guide books.
[61]
Andy Overall:
Psathyrella spadicea
growing at base of live Horse Chestnut tree , road side opp Golders Hill Park. Second site base of Horse Chestnut again this time nr Wild wood Road Heath ext.
[62]
Andy Overall:
Psathyrella spadiceogrisea
New Record. Small group growing among moss and decidous debris of Beech and Oak. Ash saplings also present. In the West Heath area very close to West heath road.
[63]
Andy Overall:
Pseudoboletus parasiticus
Another species that has been recorded since 1992 first date being 28th Aug 92 on Sandy Heath a particular strong hold on the Heath for this other wise fairly uncommon species.
[64]
Andy Overall:
Psilocybe semilanceata
Under recorded for these records. Present most years on the 'unimproved grassland' on the heath.
[65]
Andy Overall:
Rhodotus palmatus
New Record. Found on Ulmus in deep gully between Sth end green and the vale of Helath.
[66]
Andy Overall:
Rickenella fibula
Once placed within the genus Mycena this species is now thought to be closer to Cantherellus due to DNA results.
[67]

Rubinoboletus rubinus. A new record for the heath, close to both Beech and Oak. The area in which it was growing has now unfortunately been pulverised by heavy machinery, so any further records are most unlikely. I have only pictures to substantiate this record as the specimens were immature and not collected for voucher material.
[68]
Andy Overall:
Russula amoenolens var.alba
In association with Hornbeam along wildwood road, Heath
ext.
[69]
ASOverall:
This species is so variable in colour, from ochre through red to purple. It would be entirely understandable that one would consider each, a separate species. And thatŐs coming from someone who dislikes splitting among species that are clearly just forms of one species.
[70]
Andy Overall:
This record was from Golders Hill Park and constitutes the earliest I have seen this species, let alone any other Russula species. May 2006 had a lot of rainfall, with temperatures averaging 15 degrees, most likely the reason for this early fruting. Found with Beech, on soil, among grass, alonside the footpath leading into the park from West Heath Avenue. Another collection was made a week later on 26th May, with Hornbeam, alongside Woodland Road.
[71]
Andy Overall:
Russula nigricans
With Lime
[72]
Andy Overall:
Russula parazurea
Probably the most commonly encountered of the Russula species on the Heath, due to its association with Quercus robur and the abundance of this tree of varying ages, upon the heath. Easily confused with
R. grisea and R. ionochlora which occur in similar habitats.
Aug 2011 - A revision on this. This species is easily separated from the above by size and colour and white bloom when young. It is in fact the above two species that need closer inspection.
[73]
Andy Overall:
Russula pseudoaffinis
New to Britain, but not recorded subsequent to the date inset. Confirmed by Geoffrey Kibby. And Icluded in the Checklist of British & Irish Basidiomycota as such.
Quite possibly just a form of Russula sororia.
[74]
So very easily overlooked and misidentified as R. nobilis or R. emetica.
[75]
Andy Overall:
New Record: 10-09-05. With Beech at the edge of a Holly tree, close to Beech area, Nr. Bird Bridge. 1 spec. only. Dried for Kew.
[76]
Andy Overall:
1st record for the Heath in 2007.

[77]
Andy Overall: 1st record for Middlesex and only 7th for GB & Ireland.
Photographed, dried and deposited at Kew.
[78]
Andy Overall:
Sparissa crispa
This is a relative new comer to the records, appearing at the base of one of the few pines to be found on Sandy Heath appearing for 3 consecutive years running, form 21/08/01.
[79]
Andy Overall:
Stopharia aeruginosa
It has transpired it recent years that this species is quite uncommon and that collections are most likely to be that of S. cyanea. S. aerigunosa has more pronounced and longer lasting veiler remnants.
[80]
Andy Overall:
Stropharia caerulea
most likely collected in many cases, as S. aeruginosa.
[81]
Andy Overall:
Suillus granulatus
New Record; Growing with 2 needled pine in Golders Hill Park. 1 Specimen only.
[82]
Andy Overall: First record for the heath fruiting in association with a 6 year old Bhutan Pine, growing on the half moon lawn at Kenwood House.
[83]
Andy Overall:
This species as opposed to
T. pruni which fruits upon the fruit of bird Cherry, fruits upon the fruits of Blackthorn.
[84]
Andy Overall:
Taphrina pruni
Heath ext on Cherry Plum.
[85]
Andy Overall:
New Record from the HH ext.
[86]
Andy Overall:
Surprisingly a new record for me on the heath. During a mild, wet spell in January 2006 a substantial fruitbody appeared on a fallen oak branch, close to various species of Stereum, upon which it is parasitic.
[87]
Andy Overall:
Another surprising new record, not uncommon, I actually believed I had already recorded this for the heath. It appeared during the same mild wet spell in early Jan 2006.
[88]
Andy Overall: Red data species. This one specimen constitutes the only record for the heath and only the second for Middlesex.
[89]
Andy Overall:
Tricholoma sejuntum
Recorded on 30/07/93 with Oak on Sandy Heath. Nothing since.
[90]
Andy Overall:
Volvariella bombycina
This species was usually associated with Elm but hasadapted to other broadleaved trees such Acer and Quercus, this record was found on Beech, my first from the heath.
[91]
Andy Overall:
Volvariella surrecta - This record stands as the only record for Middlesex and therefore Hampstead Heath. With only 46 records on the BMSFRD, this species is very rare to vulnerable.
