Wimbledon Common – 2019

Fungi walks on Wimbledon Common are available on the following dates in 2019:

Saturday 5th October

The walks are insured under the British Mycological Society and are carried out with the kind permission from the Head Warden of Wimbledon Common.

This walk books quite quickly as I am limited to twelve participants and this area of Surrey is beautiful. Wimbledon Common is legally protected by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act of 1871 from being built upon and has been designated for the benefit of the general public for informal recreation and the preservation of natural flora and fauna. It is actually one the largest expanses of heathland in the London area. There is an area of bog which has unique flora and the western slopes lying on London clay support mature mixed woodland which is dispersed with waist high fern. Most of the Common is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.   Makes a lovely morning out!

Forays begin at 10am and last for around three and half hours.  It is hoped that these forays will give those that attend a chance to interact with the natural environment in a responsible and respectful manner and in doing so learn about the fungi of Wimbledon Common.

Once you have made your booking you will be sent directions and a map for the meeting point.

In terms of attire,  we are walking off the beaten track in many of these walks so please have a sensible pair of walking shoes or ‘wellies’ if it’s wet weather. If it is raining I would suggest waterproof trousers as well as jackets if you have them available. Layers always work well with our unpredictable British weather too………it’s amazing how changeable the climate can be within several hours.

Bring a packed lunch or snack as we will take a break for 30 minutes or so and of course bottled water.
